Instead of an intellectual insight, this imagery provides a lived experience of the difficulty. The recurrence of the physical symptoms is related to the habit of closing down emotionally whenever this man becomes involved in a romantic relationship. The dwarf mirrors his stunted emotional growth as well as his mistrust and isolation. The connection between feelings and asthma is a strong one. Though love is a powerful healer, because of certain beliefs, many of us resist it. We fear the pain it may cause, the weakness it reveals, or the difficult issues it brings up. For asthmatics, the fears of suffocation, of being held too close, of not being held at all, and of separation and loss are enough to cause breathing problems.
The image of the dwarf guarding the way to the heart, which also turns out to be a tunnel leading to the lungs, reveals how entwined the heart and the lungs really are. When your imagery brings you face-to-face with a truth such as this, it’s impossible to rationalize or ignore it. This experience alone creates an immediate shift in awareness. Since imagination is unlimited, there are many ways to Undo the self-protective beliefs that create this limiting circumstance.
How would you take care of this difficulty? Would you banish the dwarf? Befriend him? Become him? If one image doesn’t work, try another. An appropriate and effective way of Undoing the dwarf might involve doing the opposite of what you would do ordinarily. If you tend to fear confrontation and your habit is to try and slip past, you might have a go with the dwarf head-on. You will know if your imagery is on target by the way you feel and how your body responds.
The imagery exercises that follow are specifically geared toward Undoing the condition of asthma. This includes eliminating, reversing, and releasing the beliefs, symptoms, and circumstances that create, exacerbate, and maintain it. You can do those that appeal to you as you read along, or you can use the ones that interest you once you have finished the chapter.
“The Exorcism” provides a healing for the lungs that addresses the physical symptoms yet goes far deeper. Issues of freedom, relationship, and truth are also strongly involved. Thus we refer to it as laying the groundwork for true recovery. It eliminates the symptom by going to the root — getting whoever or whatever is interfering with your breathing to reveal itself. Because it is long, you may want to put it on tape, read it over a couple of times before doing it, or have someone read it to you. Don’t be concerned if this exercise stirs up feelings of guilt or pain. No matter what your Committee says, this exercise will not cause you or anyone else harm.
